The festival Ein St\u00fcck: Tschechien, organised by Drama Panorama e. V., is a platform for contemporary Czech theatre in Germany that has been taking place in Berlin since 2014. It presents current Czech productions as guest performances and staged readings of plays by contemporary Czech playwrights that have been translated into German for the first time for the festival and and are therefore being presented for the first time in German in these readings. Many of the plays translated for the festival have been published in book form as part of the Drama Panorama<\/a> series published by Neofelis Verlag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her article in the taz, Von Wuchermieten und Trollm\u00fcttern<\/em>, from 30 June 2025, Yelizaveta Landenberger writes: “<\/em>While many Czechs understand German, almost no one here speaks the language of our neighbours. We know about and like their beer, but not their rich culture. It is a credit to the Czech theatre festival in Berlin that it corrects this asymmetrical relationship.“<\/em>

On 27 June 2025, Radio Prague International broadcast an interview with festival director Barbora Schnelle, in which she said: “In Prague we have the Prague German-Language Theatre festival, which showcases many productions. And in general lots of German plays are performed on Czech stages. That’s why I thought it would be really interesting to present Czech theatre here in Berlin and to translate Czech drama into German. So we started the festival in 2014. We realised at the time that Berlin is a kind of hub for European theatre. Especially in central Europe, it’s important to have a German translation of your play, because German-language theatre has a certain status and reaches a wide audience within Europe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General information about our festival:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s a new generation of theatre-makers in the Czech Republic whose texts and productions are highly relevant across Europe and yet who are hardly known abroad. Drama Panorama: Forum f\u00fcr Translation and Theatre e. V., in collaboration with the Czech Centre Berlin and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Berlin, seeks to close that gap with this festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project aims to establish the regular presentation of contemporary Czech drama and theatre in Berlin, and in many respects, it has already accomplished this. The first Festival for Contemporary Czech Theatre took place in 2014 with considerable success; one of the plays presented (Bekenntnis eines Masochisten<\/em>; English: Confessions of a Masochist <\/em>by Roman Sikora) was subsequently produced in Dortmund. Many other plays and playwrights were presented to the German public in the years that followed. In 2018, Neofelis Verlag Berlin and Drama Panorama e. V. published an anthology of contemporary Czech drama titled Von Masochisten und Mamma-Guerillas<\/em> (Of Masochists and Mamma Guerillas<\/em>; ed. by Barbora Schnelle), a collection of many of the plays that had been presented at the festival in German for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic strongly impacted our festival as guest performances from the Czech Republic were not possible. We were, however, able to present staged readings and also offered interactive online formats (Talks statt Gastspiele<\/em> in collaboration with Ballhaus Ost in Berlin; available to watch on the Drama Panorama YouTube channel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cooperate with the Theater unterm Dach and the English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center, and are always looking for new partner venues where we can present our guest performances from the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein St\u00fcck: Tschechien 2023<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, we resumed live events and continued our work. We once again presented three plays newly translated into German for the festival as staged readings and invited two Czech theatre groups that we had wanted to showcase in 2020, but were unable to at the time: Lachende Bestien with the guest performances Wie die L\u00f6wen<\/em> und Kohlhaas<\/em> (Like Lions<\/em> and Kohlhaas<\/em>) and Depresivn\u00ed d\u011bti tou\u017e\u00ed po pen\u011bz\u00edch<\/em> (Depressive Children Want Money) with the guest performances Maria Stuart, Mary\u0161a (schweigt)<\/em> (Mary\u0161a (Silent)<\/em>) and Troerinnen<\/em> (Trojan Women<\/em>), featuring Ukrainian actors who had fled their country. A total of five Czech guest performances were presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
