Marius von Mayenburg, geboren 1972 in München, Studium der Altgermanistik. Seit 1992 in Berlin, Studium „Szenisches Schreiben“ an der Hochschule der Künste, „Kleist-Förderpreis für Junge Dramatik 1997“ und „Preis der Frankfurter Autorenstiftung 1998“ für „Feuergesicht“. Dramaturgie-Mitarbeit an der „Baracke“ des Deutschen Theaters, seit Beginn der Intendanz von Thomas Ostermeier im Jahr 1999 Dramaturg und Hausautor an der Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin.
... WeiterRoman Olekšák gehört zu den profiliertesten Übersetzern neuer deutscher Dramatik ins Slowakische. Seine Übersetzungen der Stücke Marius von Mayenburgs wurde vielfach inszeniert und vom Theaterinstitut Bratislava publiziert. Des weiteren übersetzte Olekšák z.B. Peter Bichsel SAN SALVADOR, Peter Turrini ENDLICH SCHLUSS, Urs Widmer TOP DOGS, Rimini Protokoll. Olekšák ist auch ein viel produzierter Dramatiker, Autor von Kurzgeschichten, Radiospielen und TV-Serien, anerkannter Regisseur und Dramaturg für Theater und TV.

The challenge in translating contemporary dramatic texts

Workshop
Marius von Mayenburg and the Slovakian translator and playwright, Roman Olekšák , will be working together on the Slovakian final draft of Olekšák’s translation of Mayenburg’s play The Dog, the Night, and the Knife (Der Hund, die Nacht und das Messer). The last phase of their joined work is open to participants and Olekšák will discuss the topic, Poetological introduction to the work of Marius von Mayenburg and the specifics in translating his plays, with them, talking about his methodical approach. We will be working with text excerpts. The workshop language is German. Knowledge of a Slavic language is advantageous.

Our “Guest Hosts” will answer our workshop participants’ questions at the “Roundtable”. Our first Guest Hosts are Roman Olekšák and his German translator, Mirko Kraetsch. They will share the challenges of translating for the stage, giving specific examples from their experience.
